Serial killers, while not uniquely America, are deeply entrenched in the American psyche. They seem to have captured our collective imaginations with books, movies, and TV shows. All featuring serial killers, some of which are the main characters. While the reality of what serial killers are really like is different from that what is in popular media, they are no less fascinating or terrifying.
What is it about serial killers that fascinates us so much? It could be that we like them for the same reasons we like roller coasters: the fear is enjoyable. There is a certain fascination with that that is other or different from us. It may also be the mystery they embody for there are still so many serial killers who are as yet unidentified. In our darkest moments, we may even envy their lack of emotion.
